predictably failed

March was a bit of a struggle for the two of us and can be well summarized with Mike Tysons famous saying: „We all have a plan until we get punched in the face.“

As the winter months slowly faded we got ready to kick off this years competition season. The first meeting of the year was no triathlon but a swim meeting in Zurich. For the first time ever, we signed up for 100m freestyle next to our current main event which is 400m freestyle.

The past few months have included a lot of speed work and things have been going quite well. For this reason we expected a strong 100m and steady races over the 400m. But - it was not meant to be. Beginning of the race week we both showed symptoms of a cold and therefore skipped most of our training sessions during the last six days leading into the event. Thinking that we could just fight through, we still attended the event. Giving excuses for underperforming has never sat well with us.

But considering our health circumstances leading into the race, we need to admit that participating was not the best choice.  Not listening to our bodies was wrong and peak performances were clearly out of reach.

Even though this meeting hasn’t been a major race of the season we both still felt disappointed with how it turned out. However, regrets won’t change the outcome anymore. We have done the best we could. No matter how hard you want it, forcing your body won’t ever help.

Failing will always be hard. But what if you figure it all out? What if you need to fail to get to where you are supposed to be? Success never happens overnight. You need to get lost, need to make mistakes and mess up. Over and over again, just to maybe getting it one day.

We've learnt our lesson the hard way. To anyone who knows Michal Jordan's famous flu game... Yes, he scored 38 points against the Utah Jazz, but that was during game 5 of the 1997 finals. You can aspire his mentality but remember to be smart whilst doing so...

March is over. Time to shift our focus towards spring and our next chances. We are currently training in Spain where we will spend most of April, preparing for the tri season, kicking off in June.

Hasta la vista!
